Position Summary:

The Marine Research Specialist will play a crucial role in formulating effective research and conservation strategies for whale sharks and manta rays at Georgia Aquarium's IUCN Center for Species Survival (CSS). We are looking for a dedicated researcher capable of establishing and overseeing a research program that aligns with the aquarium's objectives while consistently disseminating scientific findings in peer-reviewed publications. This role also acts as a vital resource for content and communication to promote accurate scientific messaging through the aquarium's outreach initiatives.

Responsibilities:

  1. Exhibit a strong commitment to the vision, mission, and values of Georgia Aquarium.
  2. Conduct exemplary research (both field-based and aquarium-based) that furthers the conservation of species and ecosystems, with a focus on filter-feeding elasmobranchs.
  3. Publish high-quality scientific research and present findings at national and international conferences as necessary.
  4. Ensure compliance with IACUC submissions and all relevant state, federal, or international research permitting.
  5. Act as a mentor and advisor to volunteers, interns, and graduate students.
  6. Collaborate with the CSS team and the broader IUCN network to identify conservation priorities and requirements for at-risk sharks and rays.
  7. Develop and oversee research and conservation projects, including budget management, under the guidance of the Senior Director of Research & Conservation.
  8. Maintain formal and informal partnerships with external research entities and institutions to advance shared research objectives.
  9. Work alongside the aquarium's Public Relations and Communications team to promote the research program.
  10. Engage in aquarium teams, committees, and other relevant working groups as needed.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Research & Conservation or as workload dictates.
Qualifications:

This position is based in Atlanta, GA, USA.

Education:
  1. A Ph.D. in Zoology, Wildlife and Fisheries, Ecology, Marine Biology, or a related field.
Experience and Skills:
  1. Experience working with whale sharks and manta rays in both field and aquarium research contexts.
  2. Proven track record of strong oral and written communication skills and productivity.
  3. Exceptional research and quantitative analysis skills.
  4. Statistical proficiency with multivariate datasets, particularly using the R platform.
  5. Ability to think innovatively and collaborate effectively across diverse local communities and partner organizations.
  6. Demonstrated success in publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  7. Capability to communicate scientific concepts to the public in an engaging manner.
  8. Advanced SCUBA certification.
  9. Outstanding interpersonal skills to engage effectively with a diverse audience, including aquarium staff, volunteers, visitors, academic colleagues, and donors.
  10. Comfort in engaging with news media.
  11. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for research and conference opportunities.
