Clinical Laboratory Support Specialist

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Laboratory Support Specialist to join our team at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems. The successful candidate will provide critical support services for our clinical and anatomical laboratories, ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Resolve problems with orders and specimens, and respond to telephone inquiries for test results and specimen collection criteria.
- Prepare coolers for blood delivery, receive blood product inventory, scan digital slides, file slides and tissue blocks, and perform daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance of equipment.
- Receive and deliver specimens and reports, and compile case data including specimen designation for accurate testing.
- Perform CLIA Waived Lab Testing, register and access all patient material as required, and maintain workload recording and quality control.
- Provide internal and/or external courier services transporting items, ensuring timely deliveries according to departmental requirements.
Requirements:
- Previous experience in a clinical laboratory, reference laboratory, or college-level laboratory coursework.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driver's record if required to drive between sites.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, with one year of post-high school education in a Health Science field preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to biohazards and potentially infectious body fluids.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals and reagents.
- Working in a fast-paced environment with frequent and intense customer interactions.
Physical Requirements:
- Lifting less than 20 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, sitting, and reaching.
- Repetitive motion: typing, pipetting, and plating.
