Acute Care Surgery Advanced Practice Provider

Position Overview
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a crucial role in delivering patient-focused care within the Acute Care Surgery and Emergency General Surgery environments. As a vital member of a multidisciplinary team, the APP is responsible for executing clinical responsibilities while upholding the highest ethical standards and prioritizing the mission, vision, and values of Atrium Health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive medical histories, physical assessments, and formulates treatment strategies for surgical patients.
- Independently manages rounds for pre-operative and post-operative patients, assesses inpatient, emergency, and ICU consultations, and evaluates surgical candidacy.
- Assists in various emergency and elective surgical procedures, including laparoscopic and open abdominal surgeries.
- Evaluates new patient consultations and follow-ups in the clinic multiple days each week.
- Provides training, supervision, and mentorship to APP fellows, medical students, and PA/NP students.
- Accurately documents all patient interactions, including observations, interventions, and actions in the medical record in a timely manner.
- Acts as an advocate for patients and their families within the served population.
- Engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives and service excellence efforts.
- Follows access and productivity guidelines to optimize patient access to care.
- Adheres to established care protocols to ensure the delivery of innovative and cost-effective management, both in-person and virtually.
- Regularly participates in assigned meetings and committees.
- Embodies the core values of Atrium Health.
- Complies with Medical Group Minimum Work Standards.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program is required. Candidates must be eligible for licensure as a NP or PA in the relevant state and possess prescriptive privileges and a DEA license. BLS certification for healthcare providers from AHA is mandatory, along with maintenance of certification.
- Nurse practitioners must hold a Master's degree in Nursing or a Doctorate of Nursing Practice, with certification from a nationally recognized certifying body.
- Physician Assistants are required to have a master's degree and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Patient Population:
Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles and the ability to address age-specific issues for various patient demographics.
Protected Health Information:
Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to what is necessary for job functions, shared only on a need-to-know basis.
Reporting Structure:
This position reports directly to the collaborating physician and/or APP leader.
Educational Requirements:
For Nurse Practitioners: Master's degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice required. Registered Nurse license and certification in the area of practice from a nationally recognized certifying body are essential. ACNP or AGACNP board certification is required based on the population served.
For Physician Assistants: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required; a master's degree is preferred. Certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants is preferred.
