Position Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a crucial role in delivering patient-focused care within the Acute Care Surgery and Emergency General Surgery environments. As a vital member of a multidisciplinary team, the APP is responsible for executing clinical responsibilities while upholding the highest ethical standards and prioritizing the interests of Atrium Health, aligning with our mission, vision, and values.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive medical histories, physical examinations, and routine assessments to formulate treatment plans for surgical patients.
  • Independently manage rounds for pre- and post-operative patients, assess inpatient, emergency, and ICU consults, and evaluate surgical candidacy.
  • Assist in various emergency and elective general surgery procedures, including laparoscopic and open abdominal surgeries.
  • Evaluate new patient consults and follow-ups in the clinic 2-3 days weekly.
  • Engage in training, precepting, and mentoring of APP fellows, medical students, and PA/NP students.
  • Document all patient interactions, ensuring timely and accurate medical record-keeping.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and their families.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and service excellence programs.
  • Comply with access and productivity policies to enhance patient access to care.
  • Follow established care protocols to provide innovative and cost-effective management both in-person and virtually.
  • Actively participate in assigned meetings and committees.

Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program is required. Candidates must be eligible for licensure as a NP or PA in the state of practice, with prescriptive privileges and DEA license. BLS certification for healthcare providers from AHA is mandatory, along with maintenance of certification.

  • Nurse practitioners must possess a Master's degree in Nursing or a Doctorate of Nursing Practice, along with certification from a nationally recognized certifying body.
  • Physician Assistants are required to have a Master's degree and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Patient Population:

Demonstrates understanding of growth and development principles, responding effectively to age-specific needs across various patient demographics.

Protected Health Information:

Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to what is necessary for job functions, shared only on a need-to-know basis.

Reporting Structure:

This position reports directly to the collaborating physician and/or APP leader.

Educational Requirements:

For Nurse Practitioners: A Master's degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice is required, along with licensure as a Registered Nurse and certification in the relevant practice area.

For Physician Assistants: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required; a Master's degree is preferred, along with certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
