Acute Care Surgery Advanced Practice Provider

Position Overview
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) plays a crucial role in delivering patient-focused care within the Acute Care Surgery and Emergency General Surgery environments. As a vital member of a multidisciplinary team, the APP is responsible for executing clinical responsibilities while upholding the highest ethical standards and prioritizing the mission, vision, and values of Atrium Health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive medical histories, physical assessments, and formulates treatment strategies for surgical patients.
- Independently manages rounds for pre-operative and post-operative patients, assesses inpatient, emergency, and ICU consultations, and evaluates surgical candidacy.
- Assists in various emergency and elective surgical procedures, including laparoscopic and open abdominal surgeries.
- Evaluates new patient consultations and follow-ups in the clinic multiple days each week.
- Provides mentorship and training to APP fellows, medical students, and PA/NP students.
- Maintains accurate documentation of patient interactions, ensuring timely and appropriate entries in medical records.
- Acts as an advocate for patients and their families.
- Engages in continuous quality improvement initiatives and service excellence efforts.
- Follows access and productivity guidelines to optimize patient care access.
- Delivers innovative and cost-effective care management both in-person and virtually.
- Regularly participates in assigned meetings and committees.

Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program is required. Candidates must be eligible for licensure as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in their practice state, with prescriptive privileges and DEA license required. BLS certification for healthcare providers from AHA is mandatory, along with maintenance of certification.
- Nurse Practitioners must possess a Master's degree in Nursing or a Doctorate of Nursing Practice, with certification from a nationally recognized certifying body for the relevant population.
- Physician Assistants are required to have a Master's degree and certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
Patient Population:
Demonstrates understanding of growth and development principles, effectively addressing age-specific issues for a diverse patient demographic.
Protected Health Information:
Access to protected health information (PHI) is limited to what is necessary for job functions, shared only on a need-to-know basis.
Reporting Structure:
This role reports directly to the collaborating physician and/or APP leader.
Educational Requirements:
For Nurse Practitioners: A Master's degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice is required, along with a valid Registered Nurse license and certification in the area of practice from a recognized certifying body.
For Physician Assistants: Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program is required; a Master's degree is preferred, along with certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
