Position Overview

We are in search of a senior optical engineer with extensive hands-on experience in the design and construction of optical systems to join our Optics and Photonics team. The ideal candidate will possess a knack for devising innovative solutions to intricate problems and will excel in a demanding environment while effectively managing and completing projects within established timelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement internal research and development (IRAD) and contractual projects in optics and photonics.
  • Convert client requirements into actionable system design metrics.
  • Design and configure a diverse range of laboratory optical and testing equipment.
  • Collaborate closely with team members on daily tasks involving data collection, processing, and documentation.
  • Create software solutions (e.g., algorithms, performance models) and hardware solutions (e.g., lab equipment, breadboards) as necessary.
  • Design mechanical systems and fixtures to facilitate experimentation.
  • Stay informed about the latest advancements in optical technology and contribute to the creation of new solutions.
  • Engage with clients and assist in the preparation of proposals.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in physics, optical engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field.
  • In-depth knowledge of optical principles, fiber optics, lasers, detectors, and optical components.
  • Expertise in optical design and simulation software such as Zemax, Code V, and Lumerical.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python programming languages.
  • Experience with LabView software.
  • Practical experience in building, maintaining, and operating precision optical laboratory systems, including lasers, LEDs, optics, fiber optics, electronics, and mechanical sub-assemblies.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information and collaborate with a diverse cross-functional team.
  • Safety-oriented: proactive in fostering a safe working environment for oneself and others.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the capacity to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a related field.
  • Experience with holography and spatial-light modulators.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.

Compensation

The typical compensation range for this position is $115,000 - $180,000, based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
