Position Overview

The Leidos Innovations Center is seeking a highly skilled Senior Optical Design Engineer. This role presents a unique opportunity to innovate and advance optical technologies for integration into future aerospace systems, an area where Leidos is pioneering solutions for next-generation payloads.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilize your expertise in optical design and emerging technologies to assess trade-offs in performance, size, weight, and power for satellite optical payloads.
  • Employ modeling tools to gain insights into the co-design of various optical technologies within a single payload.
  • Collaborate with fellow optical designers to evaluate and enhance optical technologies, creating a pathway for their transition to production and integration.
  • Contribute to the development of a strategic roadmap for innovative imaging technologies aimed at future aerospace systems, while exploring new concepts.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field with 8-12 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 6-10 years; or a Doctorate with 4+ years of relevant experience.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance (no clearance required to start).
  • Proven expertise in evaluating the performance of optical components, including metrics such as point spread functions (PSFs) and modulation transfer functions (MTFs).
  • Experience in the fabrication and characterization of optical systems, including diffractive and meta-optics.
  • Proficient in finite element-based design tools like COMSOL, CST, or Lumerical.
  • Skilled in optical design software such as Zemax or Code V.
  • Strong communication skills with a demonstrated ability to engage with clients and deliver effective results.
  • Mission-driven with a capacity to lead a team towards achieving objectives and delivering tangible products.
  • Excellent technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of an active Secret security clearance.
  • Advanced degrees (Master's or Ph.D.) in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field are preferred.
  • Experience in developing hybrid optical systems utilizing novel components.
  • Background in proposal and business development.

Compensation

The pay range for this position is between $101,000 and $183,300. This range serves as a general guideline and is not a guarantee of compensation. Factors influencing the final offer include job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, and internal equity.
