Position Overview:

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will report directly to a Deputy Fire Chief and take on the role of Shift Supervisor/Commander. Your primary responsibility will be to oversee emergency and non-emergency operations across one of the three shifts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead as a team leader or incident commander during critical situations.
  • Maintain discipline among personnel and ensure they are updated on any changes in operational protocols.
  • Delegate and supervise the tasks of team members, ensuring optimal staffing levels are maintained.
  • Manage personnel allocations and scheduling for continuous operations.
  • Oversee the reporting and record-keeping systems.
  • Respond to emergencies as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field approved by the Fire Chief, or an equivalent number of college credits (minimum of 65 credits) while actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in fire service.
  • At least 3 years of experience at the Paramedic level.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Battalion Chief or in a comparable role.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Direct and manage crew activities during both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Oversee large-scale projects and programs.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Resolve conflicts and problems using sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Identify and mitigate risks.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and the public.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Familiarity with fire and rescue techniques.
  • Understanding of local geography.
  • Knowledge of building construction and associated fire hazards.
  • Proficiency in personal computer applications.
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of math, physics, and chemistry as they relate to firefighting.
  • Familiarity with tools and equipment, including hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials management, fire prevention, and public education strategies.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • All required licenses and certifications must be current and valid, including Fire Instructor 1 (required) and Fire Inspector 1 (required).
  • Iowa Paramedic certification or equivalent is necessary for application.
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Working Conditions:

Physical Demands: Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull over 100 pounds; frequent periods of sitting; intermittent periods of climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and other physical activities.

Sensory and Cognitive Requirements: Constant use of speaking, hearing, and judgment; frequent writing and concentration; good dexterity, vision (near and far acuity, depth perception, color vision), and field of vision.

Environmental Exposure: Moderate exposure to various weather conditions, including extreme cold and heat; wet and humid environments; noise; vibrations; darkness/poor lighting; confined spaces; high and exposed places; dirt, dust, odors, and toxic chemicals.

Protective Gear: Moderate use of protective eyewear, footwear, respiratory aids, hard hats, and gloves.
