Candidate Profile: We are seeking a dedicated and experienced fire service professional who is passionate about leadership and committed to community safety. As a Battalion Chief, your expertise will guide the department's direction, manage operations, support dedicated firefighters, and uphold high service standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Service, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or a related field, or equivalent college credits (minimum of 65 credits) while actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in fire service.
  • At least 3 years of experience at the Paramedic level.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as a Battalion Chief or in a comparable role.

Essential Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Direct and manage crew activities at both emergency and non-emergency scenes.
  • Oversee large-scale projects and programs.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities.
  • Handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Recognize and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and the public.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Familiarity with fire and rescue techniques.
  • Understanding of city geography and building construction.
  • Proficiency in computer software and applications.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of relevant math, physics, and chemistry.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in firefighting.
  • Awareness of hazardous materials mitigation and fire prevention strategies.

Licensing Requirements: All licenses and certifications must be current:

  • Fire Instructor 1 (required); Fire Instructor II (preferred).
  • Fire Inspector 1 (required); Fire Investigator (preferred).
  • Iowa Paramedic certification or equivalent.
  • NIMS ICS certifications (100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800).
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License within 90 days of hire.

Working Conditions:

  • Physical demands include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull over 100 pounds, along with various physical activities.
  • Constant use of speaking, hearing, and sound judgment; frequent writing and concentration.
  • Moderate exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and confined spaces.
  • Use of protective gear as necessary.
