Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to join our team in the Albany, New York area for the 2024-2025 school year.

Key Responsibilities
  • Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
    • Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs tailored to meet the specific needs of students with hearing impairments.
    • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to assess and set educational goals for each student.
  • Instructional Delivery:
    • Provide direct instruction to students in various subjects, using techniques that accommodate hearing impairments.
    • Utilize visual aids, sign language, and other appropriate communication methods.
  • Classroom Management:
    • Create an inclusive, supportive, and structured classroom environment conducive to learning for students with hearing impairments.
    • Manage classroom behavior and ensure a safe learning space.
  • Communication Support:
    • Facilitate effective communication between hearing-impaired students and their peers, teachers, and other school staff.
    • Teach and reinforce the use of sign language or other communication tools as needed.
  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • Conduct regular assessments to monitor students' academic progress and social development.
    • Adjust instructional strategies based on assessment data to meet the evolving needs of students.
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
    • Work closely with general education teachers to provide support and resources for inclusive education.
    • Serve as a consultant to school staff and parents on best practices for supporting students with hearing impairments.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay informed about current research and best practices in deaf education and special education.
    • Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
  • Parental and Community Engagement:
    • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians about students' progress and needs.
    • Engage with the community to build awareness and support for deaf and hard of hearing programs.
  • Use of Technology:
    • Incorporate assistive technologies and adaptive equipment to enhance learning experiences.
    • Maintain and troubleshoot hearing devices, such as hearing aids and FM systems, ensuring they are in good working condition.
Requirements
  • Active Georgia Special Education License
  • Experience working in a self-contained classroom setting preferred but not required
  • Strong understanding of individualized education plans (IEPs) and ability to develop and implement them
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with staff, parents, and students
  • Commitment to ongoing progress for students
  • Background check and drug screening required
