Position Overview:
The Chief Audit Officer is tasked with spearheading the internal audit division at Vanderbilt University (VU) and will engage collaboratively within a co-sourced framework.

This leadership role is crucial to the university's collective initiative to bolster internal audit functions and deliver insightful evaluations to the institution.

Functionally reporting to the Chair of the Audit Committee of the VU Board of Trust and administratively to the Senior Director of Risk and Insurance Management within the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), the Chief Audit Officer will partner with the university's co-sourced audit firm to serve as the Chief Audit Executive (CAE).

The Chief Audit Officer is instrumental in directing the strategic vision, coordination, and implementation of all internal audit operations.

They co-lead the formulation and execution of the annual audit strategy, guarantee the delivery of superior quality outputs from audit personnel, and work in unison with the co-sourced audit firm engaged to provide audit services.

The Chief Audit Officer collaborates with the co-sourced firm to deliver triannual updates to the Audit Committee regarding the advancement of the sanctioned annual audit strategy.


About the Audit Unit:
The internal audit division serves the university by offering independent evaluations of governance, risk, and control measures.

The team collaborates within the broader OGC framework to provide value-added services aimed at identifying risks, suggesting mitigation strategies, and fostering a robust internal control environment.

All activities are aligned with the university's strategic goals, ensuring the highest quality of service, expertise, and objectivity for VU stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes:


Collaborate with the co-sourced partner to lead the Internal Audit functions, encompassing responsibility for personnel, processes, systems, and strategic direction of the work unit.

Provide strategic leadership to align audit activities with institutional goals and objectives.

Audit Planning, Execution, and Oversight: Support the co-sourced partner by overseeing the preparation of comprehensive audit reports, ensuring clear communication of scope, findings, recommendations, and risk assessments.

Work alongside the co-sourced partner to present audit findings to executive leadership, governing bodies, and other pertinent stakeholders.


Risk Assessment:

Direct the thorough risk assessment process to identify potential risks to the university, including financial, operational, strategic, and reputational risks.


Reporting and Communication:

Report on the status of the approved internal audit plan, audit findings, and other significant updates to the Audit Committee on a tri-annual basis (or more frequently as required).


Policy Development:

Formulate and maintain internal audit policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure consistent and effective audit management practices across the university.


Risk Monitoring and Reporting:

Establish and uphold systems and processes for ongoing monitoring of risks (audit & operational) and timely reporting to senior management and relevant stakeholders.


Vendor Management:

Oversee relationships with external vendors, including co-sourced audit vendors, to ensure the university receives optimal services and support in managing risks and insurance matters.


Stakeholder Engagement:

Collaborate with key stakeholders, including senior management, department heads, legal counsel, and external advisors, to communicate risk-related issues, secure buy-in for risk management initiatives, and cultivate a risk-aware culture within the university.


Executive Reporting:

Prepare and present reports on internal audit matters to executive management and other relevant committees as necessary.

This is a hybrid position requiring a minimum of three days per week on campus.


Supervisory Relationships:


This role entails direct supervisory responsibilities, as well as indirect supervisory coordination for external teams, including internal auditors and other consultants.


Education and Certifications:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is essential.
A Master of Business Administration or a degree in Higher Education Administration is preferred.
A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) license is required.

Experience and Skills:
A minimum of ten years of audit experience in a complex organization is required, with higher education experience being essential.
At least five years of supervisory experience of professional staff is necessary.

A comprehensive understanding of financial, operational, and compliance risks related to business processes, along with the ability to analyze such processes to identify significant issues, associated risks, and value-added controls is required.

Knowledge of the IIA professional practices framework is necessary, and experience leading Quality Assurance Reviews is preferred.

Familiarity with internal control conceptual frameworks, such as COSO or COBIT, is preferred.
