Position Summary:
The Senior Automation Control Engineer is an integral part of our Engineering team. This position leverages engineering principles and process expertise to fulfill two vital functions.

Accountable for the support of initiatives related to new process implementations, which encompasses automation design and strategy, startup, commissioning, mechanical and electrical installation, as well as validation assistance.

Provide round-the-clock support to the Manufacturing Support Engineering team regarding the operation and maintenance of manufacturing process equipment, while also offering technical guidance to enhance and optimize process automation functionalities.

Each project presents unique challenges, necessitating collaboration, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills for successful outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) for site automation and control systems, including the design, upkeep, and monitoring of manufacturing control components and infrastructure to achieve site manufacturing goals.
  • Actively engage in automation and controls project planning, execution, and startup phases.
  • Comprehend process equipment control systems, programming, and the implementation of control systems within a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) environment.
  • Design and deploy solutions aimed at enhancing manufacturing operations, such as system monitoring tools for proactive oversight and alerting of core responsibilities.
  • Identify, isolate, and rectify manufacturing equipment issues.
  • Recognize and integrate data sources to enhance manufacturing transparency.
  • Ensure compliance with software and hardware licensing in accordance with corporate and site policies.
  • Troubleshoot process equipment by diagnosing and resolving complex hardware, software, instrument, and process challenges to maintain system readiness.
  • Provide technical leadership to improve and enhance process equipment and support process investigations.
  • Assist in the implementation of new process equipment, including commissioning test protocols, punch-list execution, administrative documentation, and training.
  • Lead factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) for new equipment, with some travel required.
  • Collaborate with Tech Transfer, Project Engineering, Manufacturing, and Process Development teams in the design, documentation (URS, Process Descriptions, and Equipment Specifications), and procurement of equipment.
  • Utilize process/system knowledge to guide technical decisions related to automation, mechanical, and electrical solutions throughout GMP/PD processes.
  • Support the validation of equipment, generation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and overall process layout and flow.
  • Work closely with site project engineers to ensure critical utility systems are appropriately designed for new process implementations.
  • Provide technical leadership and support for control systems, including network hardware design, firewalls, domains and trusts, virtualization, Windows Server, storage, security, and backup solutions for manufacturing systems.
  • Oversee Active Directory and related network systems.
  • Maintain networks, switches, servers, and server backup/restore processes.
  • Respond to emergency situations in manufacturing and laboratory environments.
  • Support major capital project reviews.
  • Collaborate with corporate IT to install and support LAN/WAN, routers, and switches for remote data traffic and access.
  • Adhere to safety policies and procedures, working in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Complete all job-related safety and training requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or technical degree in engineering, instrumentation, process automation, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience in supporting and resolving complex processes, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Experience in computer control automation system startups, loop tuning, troubleshooting, and control system modifications.
  • Familiarity with control system programming languages, IO networks, control computers, and associated control components.
  • Experience with control platforms such as Rockwell Factory Talk, AB PLCs, WonderWare, iFix, DeltaV, and related IO and communication protocols.
  • Proficient in engineering principles and skills, including Microsoft Office tools (e.g., Excel, Word, Visio).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Development experience with distributed control and supervisory systems, SCADA, historians, and SQL program development.
  • Familiarity with Pi Historians, relational databases, and visualization software.
  • Experience in the Biotech industry, with an understanding of cGMPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and MS project tools is a plus.
