Position Overview
The Anesthesiologist Assistant is responsible for delivering anesthetic care to patients under the direct supervision of a Pediatric Anesthesiologist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collects comprehensive medical histories and conducts physical examinations of patients.
  • Confirms patient identity, the procedure to be performed, and ensures informed consent has been secured from the parent or legal guardian, including verification of NPO status.
  • Evaluates the patient's pain management requirements prior to the procedure.
  • Assesses medical history, physical condition, and age-specific needs to ensure a safe and effective anesthetic experience.
  • Collaborates with the supervising anesthesiologist to discuss the patient's medical requirements and determine appropriate pre-anesthetic medications and techniques.
  • Documents orders for pre-anesthetic medications.
  • Conducts pre-anesthesia equipment checks and organizes the operating rooms for scheduled procedures.
  • Participates in Time Out procedures to verify patient identity, the procedure, and the surgical site.
  • Administers the agreed anesthetic plan alongside the supervising anesthesiologist.
  • Inserts peripheral venous catheters and other necessary lines under supervision.
  • Executes safe techniques for mask ventilation, tracheal intubation, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Ensures adherence to infection control protocols and anesthetic safety standards.
  • Continuously monitors patients using various medical devices and documents findings at regular intervals.
  • Adjusts anesthesia levels and respiratory support as needed based on patient responses.
  • Observes vital signs and performs necessary analyses to ensure patient safety.
  • Records fluid balance and vital outputs, maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Collaborates with the supervising anesthesiologist to manage fluid and electrolyte balance.
  • Maintains vigilance and promptly reports any adverse reactions to the supervising anesthesiologist.
  • Keeps detailed records of medications administered and patient responses.
  • Assists in the resuscitation of critically ill or compromised patients.
  • Contributes to team dynamics by providing support during breaks for anesthesia personnel.
  • Delivers comprehensive reports on the patient's condition and anticipated challenges to the post-anesthesia care team.
  • Conducts post-anesthesia evaluations to monitor patient recovery and address potential complications.
  • Initiates respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation in the immediate recovery phase.
  • Administers pharmacological or fluid support as necessary for cardiovascular stability post-anesthesia.
  • Evaluates patients for discharge readiness from the post-anesthesia care unit.

Essential Qualifications

  • Master's Degree from an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant program.
  • Certification as an Anesthesiologist Assistant from the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.
  • State licensure as an Anesthesiologist Assistant.
  • Current CPR BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Active PALS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association.
  • Successful completion of a Level II Background Check.
