Position Overview
Responsible for delivering anesthetic care to patients under the direct supervision of a Pediatric Anesthesiologist.
Key Responsibilities
- Collects comprehensive medical histories and conducts physical examinations of patients.
- Confirms patient identity, the procedure to be performed, and ensures informed consent has been obtained from the parent or legal guardian. Verifies appropriate fasting times.
- Evaluates the patient's pain management requirements prior to the procedure.
- Assesses the patient's medical history, physical condition, age-specific needs, and safety requirements for a successful procedure and its impact on anesthesia response.
- Collaborates with the supervising anesthesiologist to discuss the patient's medical needs, the physiological and technical aspects of the procedure, and determines the optimal pre-anesthetic medications and techniques tailored to the patient's needs.
- Issues orders for pre-anesthetic medications.
- Conducts a pre-anesthesia equipment check and organizes all assigned rooms for the day's schedule.
- Participates in Time Out protocols, verifying patient identity, procedure, and site.
- In conjunction with the supervising anesthesiologist, implements the anesthetic plan tailored to the patient's requirements.
- Inserts peripheral venous catheters, radial artery catheters, or central venous catheters as necessary under the anesthesiologist's supervision.
- Executes safe and effective techniques for mask ventilation, tracheal intubation, extubation, and mechanical ventilation of patients under supervision.
- Delivers anesthesia care in accordance with infection control standards and safety protocols.
- Continuously monitors patients using pulse oximetry, capnography, EKG, non-invasive blood pressure, arterial lines, and temperature sensors, documenting every five minutes in the anesthesia record.
- Adjusts anesthesia levels and modifies respiratory support as needed to meet patient requirements.
- Observes skin color, blood color in the surgical field, and performs arterial blood gas analysis when necessary.
- Monitors blood loss and urine output when feasible, recording findings in the anesthesia record.
- Manages the patient's fluid, blood, electrolyte, and acid-base balance in consultation with the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Maintains vigilance and promptly informs the supervising anesthesiologist of any unexpected patient reactions to anesthesia or the procedure.
- Keeps detailed records of medications administered, techniques employed, and the patient's responses in the anesthetic record.
- Assists in the resuscitation of critically ill or severely compromised patients.
- Collaborates with team members to provide breaks and lunches for other anesthesia personnel as time permits.
- Delivers comprehensive reports on the patient's psychological and physical condition, peri-anesthetic course, and anticipated complications to the post-anesthesia care provider.
- Conducts post-anesthesia evaluations of the patient's response to anesthesia and potential complications, taking appropriate corrective actions and requesting consultations as needed.
- Initiates and administers respiratory support to ensure adequate ventilation and oxygenation immediately following anesthesia.
- Initiates and administers pharmacological or fluid support to ensure cardiovascular stability if urgently required in the post-anesthesia period.
- Evaluates patients for discharge from the post-anesthesia care area.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant program.
- Certification as an Anesthesiologist Assistant by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.
- Licensure as an Anesthesiologist Assistant in the State of Florida.
- Current CPR BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Current PALS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Current ACLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Successful completion of a Level II Background Check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience in pediatric care is preferred.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of anesthesia practices and procedures.
- Ability to assess patient responses to care, resolve issues, and adapt care plans accordingly.
- Exhibits strong bedside manners that instill confidence in patients and their families.
- Possesses effective communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Ability to foster positive relationships with patients, families, anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, and surgical technicians.
- Proficient in the values and standards of professionalism, teamwork, and patient safety upheld by Nicklaus Children's Hospital.
