Position Overview
The Anesthesiologist Assistant is responsible for delivering anesthetic care to patients under the direct supervision of a Pediatric Anesthesiologist.
Key Responsibilities
- Collects comprehensive medical histories and conducts physical examinations of patients.
- Confirms patient identity, planned procedures, and ensures informed consent is obtained from parents or guardians, along with verifying fasting requirements.
- Evaluates pain management needs prior to procedures.
- Assesses medical history and physical condition, considering age-specific requirements for safe anesthesia administration.
- Collaborates with the supervising anesthesiologist to determine specific medical needs and anesthetic techniques tailored to each patient.
- Issues orders for pre-anesthetic medications.
- Conducts pre-anesthesia equipment checks and organizes the operating rooms for scheduled procedures.
- Participates in safety protocols, including Time Out procedures to verify patient details.
- Administers the agreed anesthetic plan alongside the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Inserts necessary intravenous or arterial lines under supervision.
- Executes safe techniques for ventilation and intubation, ensuring patient stability.
- Maintains infection control standards and prioritizes anesthetic safety.
- Continuously monitors patients using various medical devices and documents findings regularly.
- Adjusts anesthesia levels and respiratory support based on patient needs.
- Observes and assesses patient conditions, including blood loss and vital signs.
- Manages fluid and electrolyte balance in consultation with the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Stays alert to any adverse reactions and promptly informs the supervising anesthesiologist.
- Keeps detailed records of medications administered and patient responses.
- Assists in the resuscitation of critically ill patients as necessary.
- Contributes to team dynamics by providing support to anesthesia personnel.
- Communicates comprehensive reports on patient conditions to post-anesthesia care providers.
- Conducts follow-up evaluations of patients post-anesthesia to identify any complications.
- Initiates respiratory support for adequate ventilation immediately after anesthesia.
- Administers pharmacological or fluid support for cardiovascular stability as needed.
- Evaluates patients for discharge readiness from the post-anesthesia care unit.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant program.
- Certification as an Anesthesiologist Assistant from the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.
- State licensure as an Anesthesiologist Assistant.
- Current CPR BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
- Active PALS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association.
- Successful completion of a Level II Background Check.
Skills and Competencies
- Experience in pediatric anesthesia is preferred.
- Strong understanding of anesthesia practices and procedures.
- Ability to assess patient responses and adapt care plans accordingly.
