Overview:
An individual in this role is tasked with a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the safety and security of individuals in the custody of the Buncombe County Detention Facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Processes and admits individuals into the County Detention Facility; conducts thorough searches and informs individuals of all facility regulations.
  • Performs regular supervision rounds and inspects living quarters and communal areas to maintain cleanliness and sanitation; oversees individuals engaged in daily maintenance tasks.
  • Coordinates and documents weekly visitation schedules for individuals; monitors movements and conducts searches for prohibited items; reviews outgoing correspondence for contraband.
  • Supervises individuals during medical administration and health assessments by healthcare personnel; alerts medical staff to emergencies and ensures the overall welfare of individuals.
  • Conducts regular safety rounds to uphold the security of the facility.
  • Maintains accurate records and updates detainee files through computer entries.
  • Performs additional related tasks as assigned within the detention environment.
Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates must be at least 21 years of age.

Licensing and Certification:
Certification as a detention officer is mandated by the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission within one year of employment. This training lasts approximately five weeks and is compensated. A valid driver's license is also required.

Work Schedule:
  • Must adhere to the assigned work schedule as per the Sheriff's Office and County attendance policies.
  • The Detention Facility operates 24/7, requiring flexibility for various shift assignments, including night shifts.
  • Typical shifts are 12 hours long, including a compensated lunch break.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is crucial.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiarity with procedures and practices related to detainee management.
  • Understanding of local laws, ordinances, and North Carolina General Statutes concerning the confinement of individuals.
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline among detainees.
  • Capability to keep precise records.
  • Skill in fostering respectful and tactful relationships with families, legal representatives, and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to respond promptly and effectively during emergencies within the detention facility.
