This research aims to fill existing surveillance gaps by creating and employing standardized field and laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) alongside custom computing platforms that deliver real-time bio- and xeno-surveillance capabilities for enhanced global public health monitoring and force health protection.

The incumbent will also engage in the establishment of the new OID Research and Development Laboratory at NHRC. This is a part-time position, requiring 20 hours per week for a duration of one year.

Responsibilities:
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, formulating hypotheses and designing experimental protocols.

- Conduct scientific observations, maintain comprehensive documentation, and ensure compliance with industry standards.

- Collaborate on new grant and funding proposals.

- Provide training and supervision to laboratory technicians as necessary.

- Prepare detailed reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.

- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor, which may include mandatory training.

- Work closely with the NHRC team to establish and visit surveillance sites, conducting field sample collection for environmental and vector samples.

- Adhere to standard operating procedures while performing molecular biology-related experiments, including total nucleic acid purification, cDNA conversion, sequencing library preparation, and next-generation sequencing.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Assigned Lead:
- May recommend hiring, disciplinary actions, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Doctorate Degree required, preferably in molecular biology, entomology, or microbiology.
- Minimum of 2-5 years of relevant experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Proficient in complex scientific procedures and techniques.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong troubleshooting abilities for technical procedures.
- Capability to work independently and supervise others.

- Experience with next-generation sequencing technologies, such as Oxford Nanopore and/or Illumina systems; familiarity with various bioinformatic approaches for high-throughput sequencing data analysis.

- Ability to meet project deadlines with attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
- Previous experience with high-throughput next-generation sequencing technologies is highly desirable.
- U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain and maintain a T3 Secret Clearance.

Physical Capabilities:
- This position involves the use of chemicals and potential exposure to infectious agents.

Chemicals:
- Includes ethanol and other chemicals used in nucleic acid extraction and sequencing library preparation.

Infectious Agents:
- Common infectious agents from environmental water and soil samples, such as E. coli; tick-borne pathogens, including rickettsial species, due to field collection of tick samples.

Work Environment:
- Primarily based in a laboratory setting.

Compensation:
- The anticipated salary range for this position is $73,800 USD to $80,000 USD annually, based on a 40-hour work week. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary; final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.

Some positions may require full vaccination against COVID-19, with proof of vaccination potentially required.
