SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Accounting Manager will report directly to the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations and will oversee the accounting operations for the School Department. This role includes managing both the accounting staff and grant accountants, ensuring the preparation of precise and timely monthly and annual financial statements for the district. The Accounting Manager will also be responsible for the oversight and review of grant reports, invoices, and other specialized reports.
This position entails coordinating external audits and providing necessary information as required.SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Accounting Manager will monitor financial activities, including expenditures and revenues, while conducting monthly budget analyses, comparing budget to actual figures, and projecting future revenues and expenditures, including salaries and benefits, for the remainder of the fiscal year. This role will quantify all budget variances and establish procedures to ensure timely and accurate reconciliations.
The Accounting Manager will prepare all financial documents for review by the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations and will review and approve all journal entries and budget modifications. This position will also ensure compliance with policies by reviewing transactions and performing various pre-audit tasks, collaborating with auditors as directed.Essential information for budget preparation, administration, and control will be provided to the Senior Executive Director of Finance & Operations. The Accounting Manager will maintain the chart of accounts structure for all funds and act as a liaison between City Finance and the School Department regarding account reconciliation issues. Additionally, this role will oversee the daily operations of the Business Office and its personnel, coordinating coverage for absent staff and responding to inquiries related to the budget.
The Accounting Manager will report on the accounting affairs of the organization and recommend necessary changes and improvements.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
The ideal candidate will possess substantial knowledge of accounting principles and expenditure control systems. They should have the ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret complex financial data while addressing accounting challenges. The candidate must demonstrate initiative and sound judgment in assessing the operational needs of the department, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet various deadlines. Strong research, organizational, and presentation skills are essential for delivering clear oral and written reports with appropriate recommendations. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships while maintaining confidentiality in all district matters is crucial. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are required, along with the capability to supervise assigned personnel, conduct annual performance evaluations, and make informed recommendations regarding employment actions.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited institution is required, along with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in an accounting role, including supervisory experience. Experience in government accounting is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position may require occasional extended work hours and does not qualify for remote work.
