Job Overview

Clarke Schools for Hearing & Speech is dedicated to supporting individuals involved in integrating students with hearing impairments into mainstream educational environments. The role of the Educational Specialist for Hearing Impaired Students encompasses both direct and consultative services for learners from preschool through high school within inclusive settings. Services are delivered in accordance with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and may involve collaboration with educational professionals, direct assistance to students, family support, program evaluations, and training initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by students with hearing impairments in standard educational settings.
  • Evaluate the instructional, organizational, and professional requirements of partner schools.
  • Assist schools in establishing effective support frameworks for students with hearing loss, including knowledge of services such as real-time captioning, note-taking assistance, tutoring, transliterating, and audiological support.
  • Collaborate with educators to adapt teaching methodologies to accommodate students with hearing impairments, recommending necessary modifications and adjustments.
  • Work alongside reading specialists, speech-language pathologists, special education personnel, and others to enhance their understanding of the implications of hearing loss on student learning.
  • Provide training for general education staff on best practices for teaching students with hearing impairments, as well as for hearing peers regarding effective communication strategies.
  • Deliver individualized or small group instruction as specified in the IEP.
  • Conduct pre- and post-instructional support for students.
  • Monitor language development and provide one-on-one instruction as required to ensure expected progress.
  • Encourage self-advocacy skills and help students comprehend the impact of their hearing loss.
  • Assess physical environments to ensure optimal access to auditory and visual information.
  • Oversee the utilization of hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM systems, and other assistive technologies.
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting skills when challenges arise in educational settings.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and other relevant discussions within the educational institutions.
  • Understand the non-academic and social-emotional needs of students with hearing impairments and assist in creating suitable support mechanisms within the mainstream educational framework.
  • Plan and deliver group orientation workshops and ongoing professional development for staff.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Deaf Education with a focus on listening and spoken language.
  • Valid state Department of Education License as a Teacher of the Deaf.
  • Experience teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing, utilizing listening and spoken language.
  • Willingness to learn about best practices in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment for students with hearing impairments.
  • Familiarity with the operations of public schools.
  • Understanding of support services and their management.
  • Knowledge of common modifications and accommodations for students with hearing loss, along with the ability to articulate their benefits.
  • Proficient in writing reports and correspondence, including quarterly updates, newsletters, and informational materials.
  • Knowledgeable about amplification, adaptive technologies, and relevant tools.
