Job Title: Head of Legal

BitPay is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Head of Legal to join our team. As a key member of our Risk Management team, you will be responsible for leading the Legal Department and providing strategic advice to our leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide proactive and actionable counsel to the Company, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and mitigating risk.
  • Support a fast-paced business with tight deadlines and multiple stakeholders, delivering thorough and precise work with minimal supervision.
  • Serve as a liaison with external legal counsel and manage task assignments and deliverables.
  • Analyze and provide guidance on evolving laws, regulations, and trends impacting the business.
  • Collaborate with compliance, marketing, development, sales, finance, and product teams to draft, negotiate, and review agreements.
  • Review contracts, including enterprise partnership and merchant agreements, and promote BitPay products.
  • Support intellectual property, marketing, employment, corporate governance, litigation, and disputes, as well as data privacy and information security.
  • Partner with the Chief Compliance Officer to support regulatory examinations and audits.
  • Advise on corporate governance, potential investment, and other corporate development activities.
  • Manage outside counsel and work with the CFO and COO on legal budget and resource planning.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of experience in corporate law, preferably in a fast-growth cryptocurrency or financial services company.
  • Experience working in a small company with fewer than 200 employees, supporting cross-departmental projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with regulatory bodies such as FinCEN, state money transmitter regulators, Treasury, SEC, CFTC, or similar entities.
  • Familiarity with non-US regulatory frameworks and experience collaborating with non-US legal advisors.
  • Substantial experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts and transactions, interpreting regulations, and developing policies and procedures.
  • Strong individual contributor with excellent business judgment and a strategic approach to legal and operational goals.
  • Ability to provide digestible explanations of complex legal considerations and risks, without relying on jargon.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including project management skills.
  • Team-oriented with a collaborative approach, open to diverse perspectives and cultures.
  • JD from a well-regarded law school and membership in good standing in a U.S. state bar.
