Position Overview

The Division of Adult Institutions is seeking to fill an Instructor position specializing in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language, situated within a correctional facility.

Role Summary

Under the general guidance of the Education Director, this role is responsible for delivering tailored educational support to individuals whose primary language is not English, as well as those requiring foundational English skills. Instructional areas encompass reading enhancement, English language proficiency, and both written and oral communication skills.

Compensation Details

This position falls within pay schedule and range 13-04, offering a starting wage of $29.13 per hour. Compensation will be determined in accordance with the established Compensation Plan and relevant administrative codes. A probationary period is mandatory.

Job Requirements

Applicants must possess legal authorization to work in the United States at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may require pre-employment drug testing. Candidates offered positions that necessitate drug screening must successfully pass this requirement as a condition of employment.

Criminal background checks will be conducted on all applicants prior to selection. New employees will also undergo fingerprinting upon hire.

This position does not offer remote work opportunities.

Qualifications

Special Requirements

To qualify for the Adult Basic Education (ABE) role, candidates must meet the criteria established by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for a teacher #850 Adult Basic Education. Applicants must hold the necessary credentials to be considered eligible.

To advance in the selection process, candidates must fulfill one of the following educational requirements:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree or higher with a minor (or 20 semester credits) in areas such as Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, or Special Needs Education.
  2. A Bachelor’s degree or higher with 20 semester credits in any of the core subjects (Reading/Language Arts, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, History, or Geography) typically taught at the Elementary or Secondary levels.
  3. A Department of Public Instruction (DPI) License in Elementary or Secondary Education or Special Needs.

AND

Applicants must also meet the criteria set by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for English as a Second Language (ESL) #861 credentials.

To proceed in the selection process, candidates must meet one of the following educational qualifications:

  1. 20 semester credits in one of the following areas: English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or Teacher of English Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  2. A Wisconsin DPI license in English as a Second Language.
