Position Overview

The Division of Adult Institutions is seeking a qualified Instructor for the Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language program, stationed at a correctional facility.

Role Summary

Under the general guidance of the Education Director, this role involves delivering personalized instruction to learners whose primary language is not English and/or those requiring foundational English skills. Key focus areas include literacy development, English language proficiency, and both written and oral communication skills.

Compensation Package

This position falls within pay schedule and range 13-04, with a starting hourly wage of $29.13. Compensation will be determined in accordance with the established Compensation Plan and relevant administrative regulations. A probationary period is mandatory.

Application Requirements

Applicants must possess legal authorization to work in the United States at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screenings. Successful candidates will be required to pass this screening as a condition of employment.

Criminal background checks will be performed on all applicants prior to selection. New hires will also undergo fingerprinting.

This position does not offer remote work options.

Qualifications

Special Requirements

Candidates must hold Adult Basic Education (ABE) credentials that comply with the standards set by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for a teacher #850 Adult Basic Education. Applicants must fulfill one of the following criteria to advance in the selection process:

  1. Possess a BA/BS or higher degree with a minor (or 20 semester credits) in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, or Special Needs Education.
  2. Hold a BA/BS or higher degree with 20 semester credits in any of the core subject areas (Reading/Language Arts, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, History, or Geography) typically taught at the Elementary or Secondary levels.
  3. Have a Department of Public Instruction (DPI) License in Elementary or Secondary Education or Special Needs.

AND

Applicants must also meet the criteria established by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for English as a Second Language (ESL) #861 credentials. Candidates must fulfill one of the following requirements:

  1. Complete 20 semester credits in English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  2. Possess a Wisconsin DPI license in English as a Second Language.
