Position Overview

The Division of Adult Institutions is seeking to fill a Teacher position specializing in Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language, based at a correctional facility.

Role Summary

Under the general guidance of the Education Director, this role involves providing tailored instruction to learners whose primary language is not English and/or those requiring foundational English skills. Key subject areas encompass reading enhancement, English language proficiency, and both written and oral communication skills.

Compensation Details

This position falls within pay schedule and range 13-04, offering a starting wage of $29.13 per hour. Compensation will be determined in accordance with the Compensation Plan and relevant administrative codes. A probationary period is mandatory.

Job Requirements

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screenings. Candidates offered employment in positions requiring such screenings must successfully pass as a condition of employment.

Criminal background checks will be performed on applicants prior to selection. All new employees are subject to fingerprinting upon hire.

This position does not permit remote work.

Qualifications

Special Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates must possess Adult Basic Education (ABE) credentials that meet the criteria established by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for a Teacher #850 in Adult Basic Education. Applicants must fulfill one of the following educational criteria:

  1. A BA/BS or higher degree with a minor (or 20 semester credits) in areas such as Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, or Special Needs Education.
  2. A BA/BS or higher degree with 20 semester credits in any of the core subject areas (Reading/Language Arts, English, Math, Science, Social Studies, History, or Geography) typically taught at the Elementary or Secondary Education levels.
  3. A Department of Public Instruction (DPI) License in Elementary or Secondary Education or Special Needs.

Note: Health, Art, or Music are excluded from the above criteria.

AND

Applicants must also meet the criteria set by the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) for English as a Second Language (ESL) #861 credentials. Candidates must fulfill one of the following:

  1. 20 semester credits in one of the following: English as a Second Language (ESL), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL), Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), or Teacher of English Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).
  2. A Wisconsin DPI license in English as a Second Language.
