Job Title: Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue

Join Warren County, VA, in a dynamic role as a Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue. This position plays a crucial part in the operation of the Commissioner of the Revenue's office, ensuring the smooth execution of various tasks and responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist taxpayers with tax forms and answer routine questions concerning tax laws.
  • Sort and prepare returns for mailing to the department.
  • Prepare mailings for personal property taxes and tax relief, business license, food & beverage, and transit occupancy taxes.
  • Work at the front counter and fill in for other departments as needed.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding assessments by telephone, e-mail, and in person.
  • Assist taxpayers with filing license applications and check applications for completeness and compliance.
  • Update business accounts as necessary.
  • Adjust business license accounts as needed.
  • Help taxpayers accurately declare personal property and ensure the accuracy of data.
  • Type license certificates and related correspondence.
  • Audit and review tax returns for accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform related tasks as required.
Requirements:
  • General knowledge of general laws and administration of policies governing real, personal property, and excise taxes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, associates, and the general public.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain detailed financial records and reports.
  • Ability to make arithmetical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to operate standard office, word processing, and data entry equipment.
Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some clerical experience. Some auditing experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Special Requirements:

Required training through the Department of Taxation (IRMS).
