Position Title: Medical Assistant
Department: Family Practice Services
Reports to: Office Supervisor

Role Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering direct patient care and supporting the Physician or mid-level practitioner. Key responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, conducting pulmonary function tests, communicating results to patients, performing EKGs, and managing multiple tasks effectively. The role requires a solid understanding of medical terminology, administering medications, injections, and assisting with various treatments. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Initiate daily processes by unlocking cabinets/doors and preparing examination rooms.
  • Power up equipment and log on all workstations in the exam room, triage, and work area, completing the Opening Day Duties Checklist.
  • Efficiently room patients to ensure smooth patient flow through the clinic.
  • Address any patient complaints regarding wait times and resolve inconveniences for both scheduled and walk-in patients. Record vital signs and promptly notify the provider of any concerning results.
  • Verify that all necessary information for the provider is available (labs, hospital records, etc.) and update the electronic health record (EHR) with allergies, medications, and medical history.
  • Prepare patients for examinations or treatments with the required instruments or supplies.
  • Notify the provider when the patient is ready using EHR tracking events.
  • Perform procedures and treatments as directed by the provider, adhering to nursing standards for administering injections and vaccines.
  • Document all administered injections and vaccines in the EHR and assist the provider during examinations and treatments.
  • Obtain informed consents and prepare specimens for laboratory courier.
  • Conduct in-house tests/procedures as ordered by the provider and ensure results are documented in the patient account.
  • Review discharge summaries and upcoming appointments with patients prior to discharge.
  • Perform administrative clinical duties, including chart preparation and managing medication refill requests as directed by the provider.
  • Address referrals, prescription overrides, and prior authorizations as needed.
  • Manage patient calls, return messages, and notify patients of test results and provider instructions.
  • Complete end-of-day processes, ensuring all equipment is maintained and all urgent tasks are addressed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and notify the Clinical Supervisor when supplies need replenishing.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • CPR certification preferred
  • Previous experience as a Medical Assistant is required
  • Strong team player with basic computer skills
  • Excellent customer service orientation
  • Certified Medical Assistant preferred

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Able to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Normal concentration and decision-making complexity
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Typing proficiency of 40 W.P.M. for electronic medical record software
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary
