Job Summary

Cornell University is seeking a dynamic and experienced fundraising leader to serve as our next Director of Development, West Coast. This is a unique opportunity to join a world-class institution and lead a team of professionals in designing and executing a comprehensive alumni and development strategy that increases philanthropic support for Cornell.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement a comprehensive development strategy for the West Coast, aligned with Cornell University's overall alumni and development goals.
  • Serve as the chief connector between the West Coast Team and Cornell Colleges/Units, fostering program relevance and strategic academic alignment.
  • Lead a team of four professional staff, setting individualized goals, managing productivity, and fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
  • Plan and facilitate team meetings, retreats, and training to enhance collaborative efforts and improve team performance.
  • Set clear productivity goals for the team, ensuring alignment with Cornell's broader objectives, and holding team members accountable for meeting these targets.
Frontline Fundraising & Donor Engagement
  • Manage a personal portfolio of 75 high-net-worth households, with the goal of securing major gifts ($250,000 to $5 million+).
  • Partner with Associate/Assistant Deans, Directors, and Individual Gift Officers to develop unit-specific strategies for major and principal gift solicitation.
  • Engage university leadership, faculty, and staff in the cultivation and solicitation process, facilitating direct interactions between donors and Cornell representatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and 7 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, alumni affairs or business development.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience serving as the leader of a team, fostering shared commitment to team goals, to peer support of team members, and toward continuous growth for team members.
  • Assertive posture specific to gift solicitation to support accountability toward goals and metrics as set by Cornell University AAD.
  • Interest in and ability to prepare academic leaders for cultivation and solicitation of major and principal gifts; enthusiasm for coaching others toward the same.
  • Ability to balance the expectations of an independent contributor role while serving as a leader and manager of team members performing similar functions.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of independent work in a home office setting located in the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • Experience utilizing excel and other data management tools to support the functions of a fundraising unit—to identify prospects, track activity and enable accountability for self and team.
