Position Overview
As a vital member of our healthcare team, you will assist patients and address their medical needs as directed by clinicians during their visit to the Emergency Department. Your responsibilities will include performing essential tasks such as 12 lead EKGs, blood draws, initiating Hep-locks, and conducting bedside point of care testing, including aerosol treatments. You will ensure the daily completion of quality controls for point of care testing, defibrillator checks, and refrigerator checks, as well as transport duties. Additionally, you will perform arterial blood gases (ABGs) and gain intravenous (IV) access as per medical orders. You will prepare patients and the care environment for examinations and specimen collection, proactively anticipating the needs of both patients and healthcare providers.
Key Responsibilities
  • Execute additional duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and standards.
  • Refer to departmental documentation provided during orientation for specific responsibilities.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations to securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients, including annual training and adherence to the UH Code of Conduct and policies regarding PHI usage in the workplace.
Qualifications:
Education
  • Graduation from a state-accredited paramedic program is required.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of 3 years of Paramedic experience (Level II) is required.
  • 5+ years of Paramedic experience (Level III) or an Associate's degree with 3 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services, or experience as a classroom/clinical instructor (ACLS, PALS, ITLS, BLS instructor) is required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Effective communication skills with individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds; ability to manage changing work assignments is essential.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Proficiency in operating patient care equipment specific to the assigned population, as well as telephone, beeper systems, and nurse call systems.
  • Completion of three peer reviews is required for Level II and III.
  • Criteria for promotion and maintenance must be met (five for Level II; seven for Level III).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required.
  • State of Ohio Paramedic Certification is mandatory upon hire.
  • PALS certification (with an exception for CMC) must be obtained within 6 months.
  • Paramedic Specialty Certification (excluding BLS, ACLS, ITLS, PALS, or NRP) is required for Level II & III.
Physical Demands
  • Frequent standing, walking, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
  • Occasional climbing and crawling.
  • Constantly required to perform tasks involving talking, hearing, and eye/hand/foot coordination.
Travel Requirements
  • Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
