Position Overview
Support patients and healthcare requirements as instructed by the clinician during visits to the Emergency Department, which includes conducting 12 lead EKGs, performing blood draws, initiating Hep-locks, and administering bedside point of care testing and aerosol treatments. Ensure the timely completion of quality controls for point of care testing, defibrillator inspections, and refrigerator checks, as well as patient transport. Carry out arterial blood gas (ABG) tests and establish IV access as per medical orders. Prepare patients and the care environment for examinations and specimen collection while proactively anticipating the needs of both patients and healthcare providers. Execute basic procedures as delegated in accordance with the annual competency assessment and orientation program.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.
  • Adhere to all policies and standards.
  • Refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation for specific duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and security of Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients, following annual training, the UH Code of Conduct, and UH policies and procedures regarding the appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.
Qualifications:
Educational Background
  • Graduation from a state-accredited paramedic program is required.
Professional Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of Paramedic experience (Level II).
  • 5+ years of Paramedic experience (Level III) OR an Associate's degree with 3 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services, or experience as a classroom/clinical instructor (ACLS, PALS, ITLS, BLS instructor).
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Effective communication skills with individuals from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds; ability to manage changing work assignments is required.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Proficient in using patient care equipment specific to the assigned population, telephone, beeper system, and nurse call system.
  • Three peer reviews are required for Level II and III.
  • Criteria for Promotion and Maintenance (five for Level II; seven for Level III).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Additional Licenses and Certifications
  • State of Ohio Paramedic Certification is required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required.
  • Paramedic Specialty Certification (excluding BLS, ACLS, ITLS, PALS, or NRP) is required for Level II & III.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Occasional sitting.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional climbing and balancing.
  • Frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
  • Constant talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
  • Constant eye/hand/foot coordination.
