UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a dedicated full-time Transplant Procurement Specialist to enhance our expanding department.

The individual in this position will oversee and facilitate all elements of organ recovery for transplantation, while actively engaging in the development of hospital and transplant center initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the allocation of organs among local transplant centers in accordance with United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) protocols.
  • Supervise and manage donor surgical recovery processes within the operating room.
  • Present weekly updates during Patient Selection Committee meetings across all transplant disciplines.
  • Assess and communicate all organ offers for transplantation.
  • Request additional laboratory testing and/or modifications in donor management as necessary.
  • Complete and maintain all required documentation for recovery and transplant services.
  • Collaborate with other UPMC transplant personnel and host Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) during the recovery process.
  • Stay informed on UNOS, AOPO, and UPMC regulations and policies.
  • Provide timely written and verbal feedback to all relevant parties within 72 hours post-recovery and transplantation.
  • Support the Living Donor Program at the transplant center.
  • Assist in the creation and execution of specialized educational programs tailored to transplant needs.
  • Contribute to the development of abstracts and research initiatives.
  • Manage UPMC-sponsored professional education efforts.
  • Participate in health fairs, seminars, and other outreach programs to advocate for organ donation and transplantation.
  • Coordinate the transportation of organs and surgical recovery teams.
  • Consult with on-call transplant surgeons regarding organ viability.
  • Facilitate communication with all ancillary services involved in recovery and transplant activities.
  • Document and coordinate organ referral communications.

Qualifications:

Associate's Degree in Nursing; OR completion of a formal EMT or Surgical O.R. Technician program; OR Paramedic Certification; OR Bachelor's degree in Science with one year of relevant experience; OR a high school diploma with a minimum of three years of experience in organ procurement.
