As a Lead Research Chemist, your role will encompass a diverse range of responsibilities focused on the formulation and consumer acceptance of products within the NCS portfolio. A significant emphasis will be placed on the development of innovative products that provide a competitive advantage for NCS.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate closely with product management to capture customer insights for the development of new formulations, while partnering with manufacturing to ensure the delivery of high-quality, innovative products.
  • Engage with Supply Chain to identify raw materials that offer competitive benefits and ensure manufacturability with a focus on safety and quality.
  • Formulate chemical products in alignment with internal ingredient standards and launch timelines, adhering to industry best practices for safety, scientific relevance, accuracy, and documentation.
  • Conduct necessary performance evaluations against benchmarks to verify functionality and superior performance.
  • Optimize formulation components to manage costs and ingredient availability for intended applications.
  • Oversee stability assessments, including initial production run evaluations, and maintain thorough and accurate records.
  • Prepare samples and manage documentation for microbiological and toxicological testing, coordinating external evaluations with relevant resources.
  • Meet with chemical suppliers to stay informed about new raw materials and potential alternative sourcing to achieve cost objectives.
  • Analyze competitor products and generate technical reports based on standardized comparative testing data.
  • Explore new raw materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, documenting findings and proposing applications.
  • Support the technical team with field inquiries related to quality, product ingredients, usage, and potential adverse reactions.
  • Assist in training sales personnel on new product launches prior to distribution.
  • Adhere to general laboratory safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
  • Manage the laboratory database to ensure it remains current and well-organized.
  • Participate in problem-solving initiatives and conduct laboratory evaluations on both new and existing products.
  • Collaborate with Engineers, Quality Control, Analytical Services, and external stakeholders, including vendors and potential customers.
  • Conduct field assessments regarding formulations, raw materials, finished products, applications, and the scaling of manufacturing and packaging for new, existing, and experimental products.
  • Review research literature, technical reports, and competitor documentation related to the specialty chemical industry, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of product specifications and formulations.
  • Collect empirical data from Quality Control, Technical Services, and other sources to establish Product Development specifications for new materials and enhancements to existing products and processes.
  • Comply with all relevant OSHA, EPA, and local regulatory requirements, as well as company safety policies.
  • Management reserves the right to modify or expand the responsibilities of this position as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A four-year degree in Chemistry, Biology, or a related scientific discipline is required; a PhD is strongly preferred.
  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in the research and development of liquid chemical solutions.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • A high degree of creativity and demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), SAP, and Adobe software applications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Proficiency in operating standard laboratory equipment.
  • Must possess adequate vision to read blueprints and other manufacturing documents.
