Pay Information: Class 1, Step C Class 6, Step C ($6,933.44 - $8, per month based on the AFT College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Faculty Salary Schedule).

Initial Salary Placement: For this position, salary placement is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and is non-negotiable. The institution offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer-paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime.

The Position:

Applications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Chemistry, beginning in the upcoming academic term. Assignments may include a combination of day and/or evening classes.

Major Responsibilities:

This position reports to the Dean of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Teaching duties may include lecture and laboratory sections in general chemistry for STEM majors. The instructor will assist in the development of curricula and will collaborate with laboratory technicians in the preparation of materials for assigned courses. Additional responsibilities include serving on College and District committees, participating in departmental, School, and College activities, and maintaining office hours for student advisement.

Qualifications:

Masters in chemistry OR Bachelors in chemistry or biochemistry AND Masters in biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical physics, physics, molecular biology, or geochemistry OR the equivalent.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching chemistry at a community college, including general chemistry lecture/laboratory courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to communicate general chemistry topics, including conceptual and quantitative, clearly to community college students.
  • Skill and knowledge in using effective techniques that facilitate the learning of community college students, especially those from historically underserved student populations.
  • Experience in or knowledge of chemistry applications in industry, research, or other non-academic settings.
  • Skill and ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner.
  • Skill and experience with working cooperatively with faculty, students, administrators, staff, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and classified professionals.

SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT:

  • Submit official college transcripts as stated on application;
  • Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);
  • Have fingerprints taken by a Live Scan computer at the institution's expense (Clearance must be received prior to the first day of employment);
  • Present original documents for proof of eligibility to work in the United States as required by the I9 Employment Eligibility Verification form;
  • Attend a new hire processing appointment in People, Culture, and Technology Services located at the District Administrative Offices;
  • Employed on an initial contract of one (1) year that is eligible for renewal annually for up to a subsequent one-year period.
