Job Summary

The Montana Department of Transportation is seeking a highly skilled Environmental Scientist to join our team. As a key member of our Remediation & Assessment Section, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in solid and hazardous waste management, analysis, and remediation. Your duties will include developing and implementing technical research, conducting site assessments, and overseeing the performance of contractors and consultants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement technical research and site assessments to identify environmental hazards and develop remediation plans
  • Conduct soil and groundwater sampling and analysis to determine the presence and extent of contamination
  • Oversee the performance of contractors and consultants to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards
  • Provide technical assistance and training to department staff on environmental compliance and remediation procedures
  • Develop and maintain records of environmental sampling and analysis results, as well as remediation plans and progress
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in physical or natural sciences, environmental engineering, or a related field
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in environmental impact assessment, including project scope development, soil and groundwater sampling, and remediation work
  • 40-hour OSHA - Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification, with 8-hour annual update courses
  • Preferred but not required: 24-hour Asbestos Inspector Training and 8-hour annual update course, Fundamentals of Highway Traffic Noise training
