Job Summary:
The Medical Technologist is a vital member of the Laboratory team at Island Health. This role is responsible for laboratory specimen processing, test performance, and test result reporting in the clinical departments of the laboratory.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform procedures relative to quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance according to laboratory protocols.
- Strive to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction through activities and interaction with customers.
- Develop and facilitate good working relationships with superiors, physicians, staff members, and co-workers/peers.
- Contribute in problem-solving activities intra-and inter-departmentally.
- Perform Clinical Laboratory Testing in an efficient manner, prioritizing and reorganizing workload in response to STAT requests.
- Produce accurate results with minimal clerical/data entry errors, including omissions.
- Assure quality of results reported through quality control procedures, adhering to laboratory quality control policies and protocols.
- Support corporate compliance initiatives, provide age-specific care as necessary, and participate in the laboratory external proficiency testing program.
- Perform phlebotomy duties, collect and process biological specimens in accordance with departmental protocol, and assist in evaluating equipment and new procedures.
- Maintain laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations, inventory and maintain laboratory supplies, and maintain workload and instrument maintenance records.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings on a regular basis, read journals and scientific articles to keep current with the practice of Medical Technology, and operate laboratory computer relative to job functions.
- Project a competent, caring attitude to clients, adhere to department appearance and dress code policies, and maintain confidentiality relating to patients, specimens, and records.
- Implement improvements as able or seek help from coworkers and supervisor, assist coworkers as needed to meet workload priorities, and appropriately respond to written and verbal protocol communications.
Requirements:
- Successful completion of a program in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Successful completion of MT (ASCP) certification or equivalent.
- Meets federal guidelines (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments/CLIA) for performing high complexity testing.
- Current AHA Basic Life Support.
Work Environment:
The work of this position is performed inside, exposing the employee to indoor environmental conditions, protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.
The employee may be exposed to dust, pollens, pollutants, fumes, communicable diseases, bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common in a healthcare environment.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Demands:
While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time, push, pull, and reach; occasionally bend, sit, stoop, and stretch.
The employee will need a full range of body motion, including handling and lifting of patients, and have the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity needed to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and medical equipment.
Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports are required; specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
