SUMMARY: This role is essential in assisting with the oversight and management of financial operations for the Tribe. Responsibilities encompass budgeting, accounting, auditing, and financial analysis. The position plays a vital role in shaping financial policies and ensuring adherence to established guidelines. The Accounting Assistant will provide support to the accounting team with reconciliations, journal entries, fixed assets, and other financial tasks, ensuring compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluate the accounting system and financial activities, providing guidance to financial personnel.
  • Analyze financial data to identify trends or discrepancies, preparing comprehensive reports for management review.
  • Support financial staff in verifying the accuracy and compliance of systems and operations.
  • Assist in the coordination, monitoring, and reconciliation of General Ledger Balance Sheet accounts.
  • Guide tribal departments in analyzing revenue and expenditure items related to their programs.
  • Prepare and record journal entries for various financial transactions, including banking, payroll, and other activities as necessary.
  • Help reconcile general ledger accounts, bank statements, and long-term debt balances.
  • Maintain oversight of the Tribe's insurance policies related to property and liability.
  • Manage records of fixed assets, including capital asset files and depreciation, and coordinate year-end physical inventory.
  • Assist in year-end audit processes.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned.

SUPERVISORY ROLE: This position does not include supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS: To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of Governmental GAAP and Fund Accounting.
  • Strong computer proficiency, particularly with integrated accounting software, Excel, and Word.
  • Self-motivated with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong ethical standards and a collaborative team spirit.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Proficient in reading, analyzing, and interpreting business publications, professional journals, and regulatory documents. Capable of drafting reports and business correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical concepts, including probability, statistics, and geometry, and apply these concepts to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to identify problems, gather data, and draw valid conclusions while interpreting technical instructions.

CERTIFICATIONS: Candidates must complete a basic accounting assessment with satisfactory results and provide transcripts verifying accounting coursework.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The role requires the ability to sit, use hands for tasks, and communicate effectively. Occasional lifting of up to twenty-five pounds may be necessary.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is typical of an office setting, with occasional exposure to mechanical parts and moderate noise levels.
