Position Overview: The Heavy Equipment Operator plays a crucial role in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This entry-level position involves working at various sites and may require travel based on client needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to safety protocols while executing new construction, maintenance, or repair tasks on both energized and de-energized transmission systems.
  • Assist in stringing overhead wiring and setting poles and anchors.
  • Support the installation of transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switchgear.
  • Aid in replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems.
  • Regularly engage with energized high voltage systems, necessitating skill and caution to ensure personal and team safety.
  • Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in optimal condition.
  • Perform other related tasks as necessary to fulfill job requirements.

Position Qualifications:

  • Capable of undertaking physically demanding labor.
  • Familiar with the proper use of company communication devices.
  • Knowledgeable in operating heavy machinery.
  • Understand basic rigging techniques, hand lines, and knot tying.
  • Proficient in the use and upkeep of hand tools.
  • Able to receive and execute instructions effectively.
  • Willing to learn about materials utilized in line work.
  • Possess foundational knowledge of line work materials.
  • Capable of identifying primary and secondary circuit voltages.
  • Familiar with induced voltage concepts.
  • Able to assist in the installation and connection of single-phase transformers.
  • Competent in performing basic rescue operations from heights.
  • Understand fundamental equipment setup and grounding principles.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Aware of minimum approach distances.
  • Proficient in checking voltage on transformers.
  • Understand flagging and tagging procedures.
  • Capable of installing and removing service connections.
  • Skilled in inspecting rubber goods and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Knowledgeable about when to utilize personal protective equipment.
  • Competent in setting up and using hand lines.
  • Understand how and when to use Kellum grips.
  • Able to identify various materials used in line work.
  • Willing to travel long distances on short notice as needed.
  • Able to work for extended periods in diverse locations when required.
  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License.
  • Capable of lifting over 50 lbs.
  • Must be prepared to work outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions.
  • Willing to work overtime when necessary.

While executing job duties, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently stands, walks, uses hands for manipulation, and reaches with arms.

Work Environment:
While performing job responsibilities, the employee is often exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical components, and vibrations. The employee may occasionally encounter extreme conditions at construction sites. The noise level in the work environment can be high. This position is primarily conducted outdoors.
