Director of Accounting Job Description

The Director of Accounting is a key leadership role at Stellar Bank, responsible for overseeing the accounting operation function of the Bank and its parent company. This position ensures the integrity of the Bank's fiscal record-keeping system, manages the general ledger, and oversees all accounting processes to produce timely and accurate financial data.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Oversee the general ledger, account reconciliations, and month-end close process to ensure accuracy and compliance with GAAP and bank-specific accounting policies.
  2. Assure audit compliance and procedure quality control are maintained for the department and Bank; review, recommend, and initiate corrective actions; oversee certification and audit activities for all branches and departments; and ensure department is in compliance with established Bank policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
  3. Assist branch and central department offices and external sources in resolving accounting inquiries and providing staff support; participate in various internal committees assigned by senior management.
  4. Responsible for preparing, reviewing, and filing regulatory reports (e.g. Call Report, FR Y-9, etc.) and internal financial statements. Ensure accurate completion of related financial reports initiated by the Bank's data processor along with internal reports.
  5. Develop, test, and implement policies and procedures pertaining to the maintenance of accurate accounting records and report preparation.
  6. Gather and calculate financial information for tax purposes; function as liaison with external tax return preparer ensuring submission of monthly, quarterly, and annual tax reports to the federal and state government; and ensure reporting is made in compliance with tax laws and regulations.
  7. Maintain advanced knowledge and awareness of financial industry status and trends.
  8. Assist in implementing cost controls for the department and monitor expenses to ensure compliance with budget.
  9. Assume responsibility for special projects; gather data and prepare reports for Senior Management, audits, and other personnel.
  10. Leverage in-depth knowledge of community banking to adapt accounting practices and policies that meet the specific needs of the Bank. Provide insights on local market trends and regulatory changes that impact community banking.
  11. Compliance with any and all BSA/AML/CFT and Sanctions requirements set forth by Bank Policy and Procedure, including but not limited to timely completion of assigned training.
Secondary Duties:

The position performs duties specific to the position and other functions as assigned by management.

Supervisory Responsibility:

The position is responsible for the supervision of all office employees and is expected to provide leadership, training, and support to staff members.
