This role is essential for managing archaeological projects across the Mid-Atlantic region, particularly in Virginia and North Carolina.
Your Role and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing field operations related to archaeological assessments and excavations. Key responsibilities include:
- Acting as the project lead for cultural resource investigations across various sectors, including utilities, transportation, and renewable energy.
- Providing guidance and technical oversight to field personnel.
- Managing daily operations, including documentation, field maps, and equipment.
- Applying expertise in archaeological assessments and conducting Phase I, II, and III investigations.
- Keeping project stakeholders informed of progress and addressing any challenges that arise.
- Contributing to the preparation of technical reports and assessments as time permits.
- Traveling within the Mid-Atlantic region, with potential for additional travel as needed.
- Adhering to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) policies throughout all project activities.
Qualifications and Skills
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:
- Demonstrated field experience in Virginia and surrounding states, with a strong understanding of regional material culture.
- A minimum of one season of field school experience.
- Proven ability to lead and manage all phases of cultural resource investigations.
- Strong supervisory skills to effectively manage field teams.
- Self-awareness regarding technical abilities and the capacity to seek assistance when necessary.
- Decision-making skills in the field, particularly in the absence of direct supervision.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to guide field staff.
- Proficiency in using field data collection tools, including GPS and ESRI applications.
- Willingness to work in varying weather conditions and physical environments.
- A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
Education and Experience Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A Master's degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field.
- Qualifications that meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
- Registration as a Professional Archaeologist (RPA) or qualifications to obtain this status.
- A minimum of 2-4 years of supervisory experience in cultural resource management and archaeological compliance.
- Strong writing, problem-solving, and communication skills.
This position may involve a typical office environment as well as fieldwork that requires exposure to various weather conditions. Candidates should be able to lift and move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
