Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Probation Counselor I to join our team at Fairfax County, VA. As a Probation Counselor I, you will be responsible for providing direct care to a majority male resident population, ensuring their safety and security within the Juvenile Detention Center. Your primary duties will include monitoring living units, security desks, and court holding areas during designated shifts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide in-depth counseling to detainees on topics such as substance abuse, crisis intervention, mental health, and conflict resolution.
  • Conduct group and individual sessions to ease adjustment anxieties and promote positive behavior.
  • Supervise residents during unit activities, health, recreation, and school programs.
  • Perform security checks, wake-up and bedtime procedures, showering and hygiene functions, and unit housekeeping.
  • Write behavioral observations and disciplinary reports.
  • Provide orientation to residents on program expectations and rules.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement, or education.
  • Valid driver's license required at the time of application.
  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, Handle With Care, and Medication Management must be obtained within specified time frames.
  • Ability to physically restrain acting out residents and maintain a safe and secure environment.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One or more years of prior experience working in a secure facility for juveniles.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather and/or emergencies.
Working Conditions

This position is considered essential personnel and requires working rotating shifts, including days, nights, overnights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather and/or emergencies.
