Department Overview:

The Software Engineering Innovation Center at MITRE is a premier resource for software engineering, dedicated to modernizing legacy systems, prototyping solutions for unmet mission needs, and delivering advanced functionalities that push the limits of technology.

Our R&D centers leverage our expertise to tackle contemporary technology challenges across domains such as agile development, mobile computing, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, human-machine collaboration, user experience, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, and decentralization.

The Software Solutions and Technology department within the SEIC is focused on delivering robust software solutions that empower local, national, and global missions and innovations.


Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will utilize your hands-on expertise in designing, securing, architecting, networking, governing, and automating cloud platforms. You will lead and shape cloud projects, advising on large-scale cloud adoption and overseeing the architecture, implementation, and operation of secure cloud systems.

Your role will often involve collaboration with government sponsors to create a lasting impact in critical areas such as cybersecurity, healthcare, aviation, defense, and enterprise transformation. Specific expectations include:

  • Leading the development of a scalable and resilient cloud environment for secure interactions with team solutions.
  • Collaborating with the Information Security team to establish and meet multi-cloud security standards.
  • Serving as the primary liaison between MITRE and sponsors, fostering a trusted advisor relationship.
  • Identifying opportunities to streamline efforts by providing expertise to other MITRE projects focused on cross-domain, multi-cloud, or hybrid cloud solutions.
  • Writing code to automate the provisioning of cloud resources in a multi-cloud setting.

Basic Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience is typically required, alongside a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with relevant experience. Candidates should have:

  • At least 3 years of experience in programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, Go, etc.
  • A minimum of 2 years of leadership experience in cloud environments, including planning, organizing, staffing, and executing development projects with at least 3 team members, utilizing Agile DevSecOps methodologies.
  • Experience in areas such as data, AI, cybersecurity, Agile, DevSecOps, and other cloud-related domains, including both underlying technologies and cloud-native services.
  • Familiarity with organizational change, acquisition, and policy governance in cloud adoption/migration.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills demonstrated through code, documentation, proposals, and presentations.

Ability to obtain a US Government issued security clearance is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

Some sponsors may require a higher level of trust, thus a pre-existing Secret or Top-Secret clearance is preferred. Additional skills or qualifications of interest include:

  • Experience securing systems to compliance standards (e.g., NIST).
  • Proficiency with cloud automation tools, such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Experience with DevOps and CI/CD automated build and deployment processes using tools like GitLab's CI/CD.
  • Experience in administering systems, networks, or databases.
  • Familiarity with modern systems engineering methods.
  • Cloud certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AZ-305, etc.
  • Experience with developing and deploying container-based solutions, including Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience using Git for version control.
