Department Overview:

The Software Engineering Innovation Center at MITRE is one of the largest government resources dedicated to software engineering. We deliver capabilities that modernize legacy systems, prototype solutions for unmet mission needs, and push the boundaries of technology.

Our R&D centers leverage our expertise to tackle today's technology challenges across various domains, including agile development, mobile computing, cloud engineering, cybersecurity, DevOps, human-machine collaboration, user experience, virtual reality, robotics, artificial intelligence, and decentralization.

The Software Solutions and Technology department within the SEIC is committed to delivering robust software solutions that support local, national, and global missions.


Key Responsibilities:

As a Senior Cloud Engineer, you will utilize your hands-on expertise in designing, securing, architecting, networking, governing, and automating cloud platforms. You will lead and shape cloud projects, advising on large-scale cloud adoption and implementing secure systems in the cloud.

Your role will involve:

  • Developing a scalable and resilient cloud environment for secure interactions with team solutions.
  • Collaborating with the Information Security team to establish multi-cloud security standards.
  • Serving as the primary liaison between MITRE and sponsors, fostering a trusted advisor relationship.
  • Identifying opportunities to streamline efforts by sharing expertise across MITRE projects focused on cross-domain, multi-cloud, or hybrid cloud solutions.
  • Automating the provisioning of cloud resources in a multi-cloud environment.

Basic Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years with a Master's degree; or a PhD with applicable experience. Candidates should have:

  • At least 3 years of experience in programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, Java, C#, or Go.
  • A minimum of 2 years of cloud leadership experience, including project planning, organization, staffing, and execution.
  • Experience in data, AI, cybersecurity, Agile, DevSecOps, or related cloud areas.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills demonstrated through code, documentation, and presentations.

Ability to obtain a US Government issued security clearance is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

Some sponsors may require a higher level of trust to work with their data, so a pre-existing Secret or Top-Secret clearance is preferred. Additional qualifications may include:

  • Experience with compliance standards (e.g., NIST).
  • Proficiency in cloud automation tools such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Experience with DevOps and CI/CD processes using tools like GitLab.
  • Familiarity with modern systems engineering methods.
  • Cloud certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect.
  • Experience with container-based solutions and orchestration tools (e.g., Kubernetes).
