About the Role

The Community College Police Officer is a critical position at Santa Monica College, responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff on campus. As a sworn police officer, you will be responsible for enforcing laws, regulations, and college policies to maintain a safe and secure environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol campus areas on foot, bicycle, or by vehicle to prevent and respond to incidents
  • Enforce laws, traffic regulations, and safety regulations to protect college property and personnel
  • Investigate incidents, gather evidence, and prepare reports
  • Provide security control for large gatherings, assemblies, and events
  • Render first aid during emergencies
  • Conduct building searches during emergency conditions
  • Maintain a log of daily activities and write reports
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; two-year or four-year degree from an accredited college or university preferred
  • Completion of a California POST-approved academy required; lateral entry candidates must possess a POST Basic Certificate and one year of experience as a sworn police officer
  • Must be free of felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving violence and meet all minimum selection standards of a peace officer as specified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation, meet District and POST medical and psychological standards, and pass a 12-month probationary period
