The Santa Monica Police Department is on the lookout for enthusiastic and committed individuals to become part of our team as Law Enforcement Cadets. We focus on selecting candidates based on character and equipping them with the necessary skills through comprehensive training.
This non-sworn role engages in a structured academic and physical training program, with the expectation of successfully completing the foundational training courses mandated by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.). During the 22-week training academy, the monthly salary is $7,211. Upon successful completion, candidates will transition to the role of Police Officer and enter a one-year probationary period.

Key Responsibilities
Participate in an intensive academic and physical training program as required by P.O.S.T.
Engage in firearm training and defensive tactics.
Learn fundamental principles of patrol operations and criminal investigations.
Operate various police vehicles under diverse training scenarios.
Accompany sworn officers on ride-alongs for observational learning.
Collaborate with supervisors and peers to analyze recurring patrol and specialized issues, contributing to long-term solutions for law enforcement challenges.
Respond to multiple emergency calls, including major traffic incidents.
Complete documentation in a timely manner.
Perform clerical tasks such as typing, filing, and assisting the public both in person and over the phone.
Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
Experience: Military background and/or relevant public contact experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certificates:
Valid Class C driver license required. Must obtain a regular Basic California P.O.S.T. Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Other Requirements:
Must be at least 20 years and 6 months old at the time of appointment.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents eligible for U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens must obtain citizenship within three years of application.
Upon hire, candidates must be non-users of tobacco products.
Must pass a background investigation and not have felony or domestic violence misdemeanor convictions.
California residency is required, living within a 95-mile radius of the Police Department.
Application Process: All applications will be evaluated, and only the most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the selection process. Resumes and cover letters are not considered during the initial screening.
Testing Process: Candidates selected for testing will undergo the following:
- Written Examination: Assessing job-related knowledge and abilities. (Qualifying);
- Performance Test: Evaluating physical capability to perform job duties (Qualifying);
- Oral Interview: Evaluating training, experience, and qualifications. (100%);
- Psychological Examination: Assessing suitability for employment as a Police Officer.
Medical Examination: Candidates must pass a comprehensive medical examination, including a drug screening, to meet the City's medical standards for Police Officer positions.
Employee Benefits
SALARY RANGE: Composed of 5 steps, each representing a 5% annual increase during the first five years of service.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: Choice of 12 CalPERS medical plans, with the City covering 89% of premiums for employees and eligible dependents.

VACATION: 60 hours after six months of service, increasing with tenure.
