Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated IT Support Specialist to deliver and manage primary technical assistance to various state departments regarding desktop, laptop, and mobile device hardware and software in both macOS and Windows operating environments. This role involves providing both on-site and remote support for software application setup, operating system configuration, network issues, local and network printing, and a diverse range of hardware and peripheral devices utilized for administrative and educational purposes. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for creating technical documentation, public speaking, and explaining complex technical concepts to both general users and management in a clear and approachable manner.
  • Proven customer service excellence with the ability to effectively assist faculty, staff, and students in technical support, consultation, and training regarding computer systems and technology. Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and collaboration to achieve project goals.
  • Experience managing computer objects, group policy objects, security groups, and users within Microsoft Active Directory/Group Policy Manager.
  • Knowledge of contemporary networking technologies relevant to desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. Familiarity with prevalent operating systems and software applications, including macOS, Windows OS, Microsoft Office suite, Google Workspace, Jamf Pro, and SCCM/MECM. Proven capability to install peripheral devices and internal/external hardware components. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve application issues at all technical levels using enterprise-grade diagnostic tools.
  • A clean driving record is required, as this position involves operating a state-owned vehicle and participating in a rotating on-call schedule with other IT support specialists to assist customers after standard business hours.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, or a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in hardware and software installation and troubleshooting.
  • Experience providing support to high-profile clients is preferred.
  • Emphasis on Windows OS and Dell hardware desktop computing, with some exposure to macOS and Apple hardware.
  • CompTIA A+ certification and Jamf 100 certification are desired upon hire or required within the first year of employment.
  • Additional certifications from Apple, CompTIA, Dell, ITIL, and Microsoft are highly valued.
