Job Responsibilities

As an Electronics Technician at the Earthquake Science Center, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining the current network of analog and digital equipment along with relay stations.
  • Installing, configuring, diagnosing, and repairing advanced electronic components of seismic stations.
  • Planning, designing, and fabricating both electronic and mechanical systems for the setup of new seismic stations.
  • Collaborating with scientists and engineers from various institutions on special studies and responses to significant seismic events.

Physical Requirements: This role requires prolonged periods of standing and intricate electronics work. Fieldwork may involve moderate physical exertion, including bending, reaching, lifting, and transporting heavy items, climbing, digging, and traversing uneven terrain. Some activities may necessitate specialized training for hazardous conditions, including aerial operations, tower climbing, and heavy machinery operation. Extended travel days via vehicle, aircraft, or marine vessels may occur.

Work Environment: Duties are performed in an office, electronics lab, computer rooms, and various field locations, which may include both urban and remote, rugged terrains. Travel on unpaved roads is common to access field sites, and alternative transport methods such as boats or helicopters may be required. Overnight travel may also be part of the job, and employees may work in potentially hazardous conditions, necessitating adherence to safety protocols and equipment usage.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is mandatory.

Special Requirements:

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-11 level, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

  • One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in Federal service, which may include solving unique design challenges, developing new components or circuits, and collaborating with scientists to understand project objectives.
  • Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, or a related field, providing the necessary knowledge and skills for this position.
  • A combination of graduate-level education and professional experience as described above.

  • Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work contributes to the development of critical competencies and skills applicable to paid employment.
