General Information
Salary Range: $81,242 (Step 01) to $105,612 (Step 10); Note: First-time hires to the Federal Government are typically appointed at Step 01.
Eligibility
Core Responsibilities
As an Electronics Technician at the Earthquake Science Center, your key responsibilities will include:
- Overseeing the maintenance of a network comprising both analog and digital equipment, as well as relay stations.
- Executing the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of advanced electronic components used in seismic stations.
- Designing, planning, and constructing electronic and mechanical systems for the deployment of new seismic stations.
- Collaborating with scientists and engineers from various institutions on specialized studies and field responses to significant seismic events.
Physical Requirements: The role necessitates extended periods of standing and intricate electronics tasks. Fieldwork involves moderate physical exertion, including lifting, carrying heavy items, climbing, and navigating uneven terrain. Certain tasks may require specialized training for hazardous conditions, such as operating lifts and cranes, handling heavy machinery, and working in confined spaces. Expect long travel durations in vehicles, aircraft, or marine vessels.
Work Environment: The position entails work in an office, electronics laboratory, computer rooms, and field settings, ranging from urban landscapes to rugged, remote areas. Travel may involve unconventional methods such as boats, helicopters, or all-terrain vehicles, with some overnight stays anticipated. Occasional exposure to hazardous environments is part of the role, including risks associated with electrical work, falls, and extreme weather conditions. Adherence to safety protocols and proper use of safety equipment is mandatory.
Employment Conditions
Key Requirements:

- Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination is necessary.
Special Requirements:
- This vacancy is limited to the first 50 applications received.

Qualifications
To qualify for the GS-11 level, applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- One year of relevant professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 level in Federal service, which may include solving unique design challenges or developing critical components.
- Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field.
- A combination of graduate-level education and professional experience as described above.
Education:
- Experience includes both paid and unpaid roles, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations, which can enhance qualifications.
