About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Technician to join our team at the University of Minnesota. As an EHS Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials on our campuses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform regulated waste operations, including waste container management, chemical waste processing, and inventory management.
  • Develop and review standard operating procedures for EHS operations.
  • Evaluate and determine hazards of unknown chemicals.
  • Operate facility equipment, including forklifts, in accordance with training and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide customer support and respond to customer requests related to EHS services.
  • Assist with laboratory cleanouts and chemical moves, ensuring proper waste identification and packaging.
  • Participate in UHS task forces and committees as assigned.
Requirements
  • Completion of a relevant two-year technical training program or equivalent college-level coursework in physical or environmental sciences.
  • Minimum of three years of work experience in a related field or a BA/BS in physical or environmental sciences or a related field and one year of related work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of chemical hazards and chemical properties.
  • Ability to successfully complete a 6-month initial training program, including obtaining an OSHA 40-Hour Hazardous Waste Operations certification and Department of Transportation certification.
  • Knowledge of regulations that apply to hazardous waste treatment, storage, and disposal facilities.
  • Strength to lift 40 pounds on a regular basis and 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Able to pass a medical evaluation and be fit-tested for a respirator.
