Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Nurse Clinician II GPG to join our team at Medstar. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong clinical skills, excellent communication, and a passion for delivering high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in a clinic setting, following established standards and practices.
  • Monitor quality and safety issues, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Function in a nursing work and clinical skills mentoring capacity to medical assistant staff.
  • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives, and adhere to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
  • Comply with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Perform general nursing care to patients, including administering prescribed medications, vaccines, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Observe, record, and report patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to physicians.
  • Dispense medication as directed, and ensure that nursing documentation is complete, accurate, and legible.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for physician examination, screens patients for appropriate information, and instructs and teaches patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Prepare equipment and aids physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Develop weekly schedules and make daily assignments, and serve as the point of contact for all clinic personnel changing shifts or calling in regarding attendance matters.
  • Participate with the Administrator I in quality and process improvement initiatives, and assist in maintaining fiscal objectives.
  • Perform mock The Joint Commission surveys to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Perform patient telephone triage, assess needs, and coordinate needs with nursing and medical staff, and provide coverage to nurses within the unit.
  • Educate/counsel patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medication adherence, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, and post tests and examination results.
  • Educate patients by providing information concerning diagnosis-related medications, side effects, and the disease process.
  • Instruct patients and family regarding medications and treatment/surgical instructions, and provide patient education and serve as a resource to other clinical team members regarding particular expertise.
  • Instruct patients with postoperative instructions following routine surgery prior to postoperative follow-up care.
  • Contribute to the implementation of clinic objectives and quality assurance programs.
  • Orders and evaluates appropriate follow-up diagnostic studies, and interprets and synthesizes data to determine therapeutic plan.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, attends required meetings, and participates in committees as requested.
  • In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, develops and supports continuing education opportunities for clinic staff, and maintains own clinical expertise by attending in-service programs.
  • Works with Nurse Manager to ensure staff are trained and adhere to office policies and procedures, including adherence to minimum service requirement standards.
  • Adapts to and excels in the use of all electronic programs utilized in the division, including Centricity, Azyxxi, and McKesson.
  • Documents all vital signs, treatments, and medication immunization administration promptly.
  • Monitors patient progress and referrals through regularly scheduled face-to-face appointments, telephone calls, and hospital visits, and coaches patients receiving antiretroviral therapy towards successful treatment outcomes.
  • Screens for basic entitlement eligibility (ADAP, MADAP, MHIP, PAP) and complete applications or referrals as appropriate.
  • Manages, monitors, and exercises all functions related to the Division's prescription refill line.
  • Collects clinical data relevant to initiate and complete prior authorization for oral medication.
  • Participates in weekly case conferences and works within a multidisciplinary team on assessment and treatment planning.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Requirements
  • Associate's degree from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
  • 1-2 years of professional nursing experience, with strong organizational skills.
  • 1-2 years of previous office management/administrative experience.
  • Previous outpatient experience preferred.
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Registered Nurse, licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia.
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
