Lactation Consultant Registered Nurse

Position Overview


We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse specializing as a Lactation Consultant to offer guidance and education to mother-infant pairs facing breastfeeding challenges. This role is crucial in ensuring that support is tailored to the developmental needs of both adolescents and adults.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive instruction to mothers (both adolescents and adults) on initiating and sustaining lactation during the infant's hospital stay, including prenatal education and follow-up post-discharge.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to modify and enhance the care plan based on maternal and infant assessments.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of observations and recommendations in patient records.
  • Serve as a resource for hospital staff, ensuring compliance with policies regarding human milk management.
  • Assess maternal medication use for its impact on breastfeeding.
  • Communicate findings to mothers and the medical team in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Exhibit professionalism and strong interpersonal skills while interacting with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Act as a mentor for new staff, fostering a culture of quality patient care.
  • Engage in departmental initiatives aimed at performance improvement and policy development.
  • Coordinate Lactation Consultant schedules and adapt to changing workloads.
Minimum Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in nursing or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing.
  • A minimum of one year of nursing experience.
  • Current RN License from the Texas Board of Nursing or Nurse License Compact, along with CPR certification from the American Heart Association.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
Expectations

  • In-depth knowledge of the physiological and social aspects of breastfeeding.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to provide effective lactation support and education.
