Overview

The role involves the examination of business licensing and retail marijuana sales tax submissions, as well as performing audits on various entities to assess the accuracy of tax filings and adherence to relevant regulations. This includes the adjustment of revenue data based on findings derived from seed-to-sale records reported by the Office of the Marijuana Commissioner, along with managing payments and modifying returns for business tax submissions as necessary. The position also entails drafting correspondence, compiling data spreadsheets, preparing audit documentation, and assisting the Division of Revenue staff with technical inquiries.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities outlined below are essential functions that are common across all roles within this classification and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties for any single position:

  • Conducts thorough audits of taxpayer financial records, including invoices, sales ledgers, general ledgers, bank statements, and inventory records to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations; evaluates liabilities and communicates assessments to taxpayers.
  • Engages in interviews and field investigations, attends relevant meetings, or operates at the taxpayer's premises to collect necessary information, records, and documentation.
  • Researches corporate, business, and personal income tax, licensing, and withholding tax records, as well as motor fuel receipts and sales and usage tax records to determine the necessity of a field audit.
  • Estimates tax liabilities based on taxpayer records or other accessible information.
  • Analyzes financial data and may arrange payment installment plans or prepare legal documents to secure judgments against delinquent taxpayers or obtain court authority to garnish wages.
  • Interprets relevant laws and regulations pertaining to the administration and enforcement of tax provisions.
  • Applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) in the assessment of taxpayer records.
  • Compiles data spreadsheets and audit notes; prepares comprehensive audit reports and summary conclusions.
  • Utilizes computer software for conducting audits and analyses.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Tax Auditor I

Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  • A minimum of two years of experience in processing accounting, auditing, or payroll transactions in accordance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Alternatively, one year of experience in auditing, examining, preparing, analyzing, or reconciling financial accounts while ensuring compliance with relevant laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Business Management, Computer Information Systems, or a related field.
