The Tax Auditor II position at DelDOT is responsible for evaluating business licensing and retail marijuana tax submissions while conducting thorough audits of organizations to ensure accuracy in tax filings and adherence to relevant regulations. This role requires meticulous adjustments to revenue data based on findings from verified sources, including seed-to-sale information reported by the Office of the Marijuana Commissioner, along with the management of payments and returns as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts audits of tax submissions, financial records, and supporting documentation to ascertain tax obligations and guarantee the precise collection of taxes in accordance with tax legislation, rules, and regulations.
- Investigates tax records and performs interviews, which may involve field assessments, to gather and clarify information.
- Detects discrepancies, issues, and non-compliance, providing recommendations for corrective measures based on audit outcomes, such as refunds, penalties, or late fees.
- Offers technical guidance and consultation to ensure uniform application of state tax laws, discouraging tax evasion, promoting voluntary compliance, and educating taxpayers.
- Articulates audit findings, which may encompass tax assessments, delinquencies, penalties, and interest owed; collaborates with taxpayers and their representatives to facilitate compliance.
- Engages in ongoing education to stay updated on auditing standards, methodologies, techniques, and best practices.
- Utilizes commercial and proprietary automated information systems and software to research, review, analyze, document, and report on financial data.
- Prepares and submits audit summaries and reports that accurately document findings and supporting evidence, recommending agency actions.
- Participates in meetings, conference calls, or on-site evaluations.
- Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders and the public through various communication channels.
- Effectively communicates and interacts with individuals across diverse cultures, abilities, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.
- May draft legal documents to initiate judgments against delinquent taxpayers, secure legal authority from the court to garnish wages, and arrange payment installment plans.
Qualifications
To qualify for the Tax Auditor II position, applicants must demonstrate education, training, and/or experience in the following areas:
- A minimum of one year of experience in tax auditing to ensure compliance with tax laws, rules, and regulations, which may include auditing tax and financial documents to ascertain correct tax liability.
- At least six months of experience in analyzing tax discrepancies or related issues, developing alternatives, and recommending solutions.
- One year of experience in preparing audit summaries and reports that clearly and accurately document findings, supporting facts, and recommendations.
- One year of experience in delivering excellent customer service on tax-related matters, including gathering information from or providing technical guidance to taxpayers or legal representatives, addressing inquiries, and resolving complaints in a timely and courteous manner.
